Head of Household

What is a Head of Household?

The Head of Household filing status is designed to give single or separated parents an extra financial boost. Single or separated individuals get a smaller standard deduction than married taxpayers who file a joint return. However, if they are providing more than half the year’s expenses for one or more children, they can claim the head of household filing status, which gets them a much higher standard deduction. Those caring for qualifying adult dependents are also eligible to file as head of household.
